Is Sustainable the New Luxury in Travel?

THE FUTURE OF TRAVEL IS HERE, AND IT’S SUSTAINABLE. Sustainable travel is more than just a hipster catchphrase. It’s a way of doing your part when you’re on the road. So, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to take a holiday with as close to a net-zero impact on the local culture and environment as possible. The idea is to make travel decisions that not only benefit you but the planet and everyone who occupies it.

GREEN TRANSPORTATION

There are many simple ways to cut down on your carbon footprint when you’re on the road (or in the skies) without becoming a human sacrifice to the sustainability gods. Here are some that you can try on your next vacation:

Walk or ride when you can, or use public transport. If you must drive, rent a small electric car at your destination rather than a gas-guzzling SUV.

Long-distance travel comes down to a choice between planes, trains, and automobiles. Ground transportation is more eco-friendly than flights and is often less expensive. Direct flights are better than connecting flights. If you really want to get serious about sustainable travel, you can use this calculator to choose the best option.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO ROUGH IT

Sustainable travel isn’t just about how you get to your destination, it’s also about what you do when you arrive and the good news is that you don’t have to rough it to be “green.”

You can find eco-friendly budget and luxury properties through TripAdvisor’s GreenLeaders program. These facilities are committed to being environmentally friendly, so you can feel good about where you stay. And keep Mother Earth happy by reusing your towels and recycling your waste.

If you want to eat at a restaurant, choose one that uses locally grown organic produce.

Try to have authentic experiences that are mindful of the culture and contribute to the local economy. Hire a local guide to show you the area. Buy handmade souvenirs from local vendors instead of ones that are mass produced in a factory somewhere.

BUT I’M ON HOLIDAYS!

We know, sometimes being green sounds like work. The good news is that there are travel companies who have done all the work for you. When you let them plan your trip, you can rest easy knowing that they have relationships with local people and businesses that help them create meaningful experiences that make a positive impact on the community and culture. Oi over here, that’s us here at Trailblazers Travel 😉
